Article Checker

July 30, 2008

Article Checker is an online tool that searches for duplicate content. Simply copy and paste the text into the box, choose a search engine and select “compare.” The site lists matching phrases found on the Internet.

This tool is great plagiarism-policing device but I like to use it to see if my writing is fresh. Many of the phrases picked up by Article checker are common. Many are simple overused.

You can use this feature for any of your writing. This tool can help you weed out some overused phrases. The site gives you a list of sites that contain the same phrase.

For example, “You are dressed professionally” is used on more than 1,500 sites. The use of the phrase isn’t plagiarism but you might want to word this differently.

I find this site to be useful for creative writing. It’s easy to fall into the habit of using worn out phrases. Article checker can help you spot some of these.

Keep in mind that this tool works exclusively with online search engines so there are limitations.

Do you have any favorite online tools for writing?

Thanks for the post – that’s good advice. . . Sometimes when I need to jumpstart my creativity, I’ll use the internet anagram server. . . type in a phrase and see what comes up. . .
