Calla Louise

July 23, 2008

Calla Louise was born on May 23 of this year. I figured that today would be perfect to introduce her. It is her two-month anniversary.

Naming a child is a very challenging task for some parents. My husband named Calla after I buried myself in too many options. He worked from a list of “approved” names.

There is good reason why he chose Calla, even though it may seem as if he simply plucked the name from a lily. The name means “beautiful” in Greek. It rings of a “Ella” which was another choice that topped the list.

He liked the connection the name has with beauty and flowers. He loved that it is unusual. But he chose this name because it was the only one on the list Aubrey could say.

Many children diagnosed in the autism spectrum of disorders have very limited vocabularies. Aubrey has some limitations but we are so lucky that she can use words. Calla is her new favorite.

Aubrey has had a vocabulary explosion since Calla arrived. She has even began spelling words, which is her new fascination.

So how do I get any writing done? Calla is in her swing next to me. Aubrey is writing words on her erase board at the table. Nap time is my work time and my husband plays with the girls in the evening so I can get some work done.

It is falling together very well.

Proud mothers always want to share pictures. I am among the lot. See Miss Aubrey and Miss Calla here
