Writing Styles

December 31, 2008

One word keeps popping up in reader comments about my fiction. Creepy.

The description suits my writing style whether I’m intentionally trying to creep out the reader or not. The word showed up in a recent post and at first, I was a little surprised. I had no creepy intentions for the piece.

I realized, as I was rereading the entry that it is creepy in spite of my original intention.

This experience has given me new insight into my own writing style. It’s creepy and I’m comfortable with that. It’s actually appealing but it could be better. The word that I would like to see creeping up into responses about my fiction is hautning.

What one word describes your writing style? What word would you like to describe it?

    Hello Everyone,
Tammi, Thanks for sharing these words about your writing style. The word that I chose for my writing was “eerie” and that’s fine with me. Here’s the link to my entry if anyone’s interested Happy New Year’s Eve: Everyone!

    Enjoy Life!

I honestly don’t know what word people would use for my writing style, but I *think* they would call it “wordy”. I would prefer it to be called “conversational” as (in my own mind, at least) I’m trying to have a comfortable conversation with readers and audiences.

I’ve had people tell me when they read my short stories that they tend to cry. Even if I am not being intentional with my writing, that is purposely making the story sad, they often end up with elements that produce tears in my readers’ eyes.

    Hi.HNY.

When I was younger I always thought I’d write a novel…but I never got further than page 2 before I got bored with it..so I went over to short stories…but I could never “tighten” them to make a credible “wow” at the end or bring them to any sort of meaningful conclusion. So I tried poetry..but it all got very pompous. But I put all this stuff on floppies once upon a time; so I’ll show that confused younger version of myself a bit of loyalty and put it out there. What merits it has, I have no idea.

I always liked what Neil Gaiman said about writing style… style is what you can’t help but do.

I believe him. That said, I’ll go with how other people have described my work: ‘quirky’.

I think I can live with that.
