Saturday Question

December 19, 2009

Let’s take a day off from talking about writing and just …. talk.

Do you have trouble sleeping? If so, what do you do to get to sleep? If not, what is your secret to a great night’s sleep?

Karen Maxwell is a literary / romance writer living in southwest Missouri. You can find out more about Karen at her journal, Write From Karen, or sample a bit of her creative writing at Fiction Fix.

    I never sleep well. I haven’t got a solid 8 hours in the last 20 years (unless you count right after injuries when I’m doped to the gills).

    I have no secrets to get to sleep, but I’ve tried just about every rational suggestion I’ve ever heard. With me I don’t think it’s that my mind won’t shut off so much as my body doesn’t like to sleep as much as most people.

    I sleep better when I go to sleep at a consistent time each night and my body knows when to expect sleep. Although that doesn’t work when I have an early meeting and I’m aware that I have to be up early. Then I wake up every so often, convinced I’ve overslept.

    I need to have the window open and fresh air coming into the room to sleep well though. If the windows are shut, I end up waking up groggy.

    I’m a nightowler, always have been but my secret to a great nights (or day) sleep:
    * dark room
    * fan to block out noise
    * stretching legs, hips and back
    * deep breathing for twenty breaths
    * emptying bladder at least twice before going horizontal
    * unplugging phone

    The notion of two fingers of scotch neet, and letting the warm glow carry me away gets more alluring as the years pass….

    I just toss and turn, then read myself to sleep.
