A Funny Thing Happened…
A few weeks ago I made the decision not to participate in NaNoWriMo. And unlike a few years ago, I’m sticking to it. Despite the fact that several local friends who decided to join in gave me the hard sell at a Halloween party this past weekend.
But a funny thing happened during the first day of NaNo. I wrote. And wrote. And wrote. Almost 6,000 words yesterday. Too bad I’m not NaNoing…I’d be 12% to the finish line. However, I think the freedom of NOT participating helped me push myself forward…knowing that I didn’t have to write, but was still writing spurred me forward.
Which brings me to the heart of today’s post. I know some (perhaps, many) of you are participating in NaNo this year…and I’m cheering all of you on, from the sidelines. So I’d like to hear from you today.
How did you do, on the first day of NaNoWriMo?

I did a 1929 yesterday, but have been lazy today. I think the compulsion is a bit constricting at times, and that is what got me today. But then again, those with the competitive spirit will find it an inspiration. I can’t figure myself out at the moment. One day I go hammer and tongs and the next day I’m somewhere else.
But I don’t think I can do 5000 words on any given day with my current routine. Anyway, I’ve been blogging about my NaNo experience here:

I finished yesterday with 3,663 words. For some reason the story is coming along rather quickly. I actually think I prepared more last year.
Final count for the day is 2186. I failed miserably last year and gave up in the first week. I’ll consider that my vacation year. lol
I managed 2293 on my first day of my first NaNo!! I know that’s only a little ahead, but I’m eager to get going again today. This is just the kind of pressure I need to keep myself writing everyday.
I did 2065 the first day and a bit over 2000 or something yesterday… or something. Anyway I’m up to 4157 and stoked with that. I need to keep the momentum up, and I’m already learning so much by doing this.
My first day was the day from hell and the worst start ever to a NaNo for me. I struggled across the line with 1243 and every single word felt like it had been wrenched screaming from my soul. Hate it when writing is like that. The lessons learnt were 1. no email before writing, 2. no attending to business demands before writing 3. its all about the writing – set boundaries and keep to them!
It turns out recovering from insomnia and a version of jetlag is worst than recovering from having your wisdom teeth out (I had my wisdom teeth out two days before NaNo started in 2008!)
Day 2 and 3 on this side of the globe have been much much better – phew!
I, too, did miserably. However, I knew going in that my first week was going to be awful – this being my busiest time at work.
BUT, can’t you feel it? Can’t you feel the creative energy out there? Thousands of people are writing! Sure, most will not “win” but what is the real prize anyway, but to have “written”. That’s my arguement FOR NaNoWriMo.
