Ae Fond Farewell

November 28, 2010

We’ve hinted at it often enough in the coming months, and now it is here. And I find myself totally unprepared for it. As usual.

This is The End. My final post as your regular Sunday columnist. Soon to be followed by final posts from your Monday through Thursday columnists. It isn’t goodbye. But it is a farewell to the old, a changing of the guard.

By the end of this week the familiar roster of writers will have laid down their pens, and ridden off into the sunset, to mangle a few metaphors at once. Throughout December we will be presenting a few of our favourite posts from the past four years. These may be entirely new to you, if you are a new reader. Or they may be a comforting visit back to familiar surrounds for those who have been with us for a while.

Either way, I hope there will be much to entertain, inspire and interest you. There will still be our regular writing prompt, [Fiction] Friday each week to keep you scribbling, and we’ll still be around, in the comments section.

And in January? A fresh start. New faces, and old. Fresh experiences, new ideas. Familiar concepts, but with added twists.

I’ve been writing this column for three years now, something that shocks and amazes me to this day. I can still vividly remember writing the first one, and the thrill of actually getting comments on it. I remember the next day sitting on the train to work, scribbling down ideas for my next few columns.

I’ve met some awesome writers, and many good friends. And even when it has been a struggle to get the words onto the page, it has been a privilege and an honour to contribute to the success of Write Anything.

Will I miss writing a weekly column? Not for the first few weeks! But soon I will, and I’ll wonder why I gave it up in exchange for the far more stressful job of editing an entire site. But I remember the confidence this site gave to me on my first hesitant steps, and how it shook me out of my complacency by giving me a forum for honest critique and feedback, and the opportunities it offered to me. I remember that, and I remember why I wanted to write for this site, to give some of that back. And why I want to continue taking the site forward. To give other emerging writers out there a voice, a place to belong, and the opportunity to not just talk about being writers, but to actually write. Write anything.

Wish me luck. I’ll be back in January.

Speaking of new arrivals, last week I promised you a picture of my new writing familiar, Jabba the Gecko. Here he is, in all his 118 grams of glory!

He is “the largest gecko I’ve ever seen”, in the words of our vet, who is an exotic species specialist, so presumably has seen quite a few geckos in his time!

You are a consummate administrator and you will be brilliant in your new role – steering us into newer, untested, adventurous waters. I know I can’t wait.

I remember you taking on the Sunday mantle – because I contemplated showing an expression of interest… then thought, what would I know? Who am I to share anything.

I have always loved reading your posts and while its sad for the passing of an era… new excellent things await in 2011.

And look at the gecko- my lordie!!
