Denise Haggerty: 21 Things

February 22, 2011

Hello all,

My name is Denise Haggerty and here are 21 things I’d like to share with you about myself:

1.) People say I’m brave.
2.) I miss the bookmobiles of my childhood.
3.) I’m accident-prone if I try to show off.
4.) I think Alanis Morissette is a brilliant poet/lyricist.
5.) I’ve seen Madonna live in concert 5 times and once paid $1000 for a ticket.
6.) I wanted to be a singer before I wanted to be a writer.
7.) I’ve slapped two people in my life.
8.) I’ve never been able to do a cartwheel.
9.) I believe my grandmother contacted me from beyond the grave via a sitar through the telephone lines.
10.) I can’t watch animal documentaries where they show one animal killing another for food without getting extremely upset at the predatory animal.
11.) I loved the movie, Medicine Man and wanted to be Lorraine Bracco after seeing that movie.
12.) I get goosebumps when inspired.
13.) I made the first boy I crushed on (an albino) fill out a Q&A form. I stopped liking him after learning that he liked watching the A-Team.
14.) I won 10 free movies in a contest and wrote my name on the ballot as “Deniece” instead of “Denise”.
15.) I had a big sister from Big Sisters Association who died from breast cancer.
16.) I would talk to trees (and name them) when I was a child.
17.) I’ve been practising yoga on and off since 1998; I was inspired to try it because of Madonna.
18.) I expect what I write about for the Write Anything website will evolve over time, but I would like to attempt to focus on fiction – mystery, in particular.
19.) I was attracted to Write Anything’s Fiction Fridays originally because I liked the idea of being assigned a topic or given a little bit of direction that I could run with; it seemed somewhat challenging and I like to be challenged.
20.) I am hoping to complete my Holistic Nutrition studies this year.
21.) I like making lists.

Thank you and I look forward to working with all of you and learning from all of you.

Cool, the albino gene runs congenitally on my mother’s side of the family … alas the A-team gene runs virulently on my father’s. I look forward to reading more of your lists.

Hi Denise! I am right there with you with numbers 2, 8, 12, 16 (I still do this today), 18, 19 and 21. I really want to join in with numbr 17 but haven’t been able to get into it.

I’m looking forward to reading more from you!

I’m with you on #21–like Rob. Many of my blog posts are bullet lists. I teach my students to bullet. I love being organized.

    Nice to meat you, Denise.

I miss bookmobiles too. Used to love the one that parked up outside my primary school. Can’t beat a bus full of books.

You know… I meant to expand upon my agreement with item #2 (bookmobiles). When I was a kid, the nearest library was 40 minutes away and there was no way on Earth that I’d get a ride there. But, luckily, the bookmobile came to town every week. It stationed itself 3 miles from my house. I rode my bike to it every week.

The librarian inside the bus-of-wonder got to know my tastes in books and each week would comb the library for new or different sci-fi books. She’d stock these behind the desk until I arrived and then would drop a half-dozen books there for me. After a few months, she let me take the full half-dozen with me each week despite the “strict limit of 2” sign. A week later, I’d be back, the six books read and ready for more!

I’d love to discover who the two people you slapped were. Hope I’m not the third.
